Berlin Night Express Night Train

Not only is the Berlin Night Express the only direct train link from Germany to Sweden but it also offers a unique travel experience as part of the journey involves the train traveling onboard a ferry through the Baltic Sea. You don’t need to worry about airport check in or stressful traffic; you can relax and have a full night’s sleep awaking in the heart of either Berlin or Malmö and all this in less than 10 hours.

Berlin Night Express Night Train Route

This train operates limited services. It runs on April 5 and May 17, and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from June 15 until August 14. Check the Snälltåget website for up-to-date schedules.

This train does not run after August 14. If you plan to travel from Germany to Sweden on a regular service (not the Berlin Night Express) you need to travel via Denmark. If your pass is not valid in Denmark you will have to pay extra for the portion of your travels in Denmark.

From Malmö (Central) and from Berlin (Hbf) the train departs on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Berlin Night Express Night Train Reservations
  • Reservations on the Berlin Night Express night trains are mandatory.
  • We recommend you make your reservations as far in advance as possible.
  • Please note that this train runs only in high season, from April to August.
If you book this train on the day of its departure, please note that you can only do so until 5 p.m. Please note that the 7 p.m. rule applies from 5 p.m. on this train, meaning you can save a travel day.

On board the Berlin Night Express, sheets, blankets and pillows are provided. Beverages and light meals can be ordered and served in the compartment. During the ferry crossing hot meals are also available for purchase. For traveling on this night train, your Eurail pass needs to valid in  Sweden.

Please note: only holders of Sweden One Country Passes, Select Passes including Sweden, or Global Passes can travel on trains operated by SJ .

You can reserve your sleeping accommodation on the Berlin Night Express in the following ways:

  • By visiting the Snälltåget website and using the promotional code "EURAIL".
  • By calling the Deutsche Bahn booking center (+49 1806 996 633 - press '9' in the German menu). Open 24/7.
  • At the train station.
  • Keep in mind that trains can become full during busy times.
