Stoosbahn - Stoos-Muotatal

Stoosbahn - Stoos-Muotatal

The Stoosbahn is a funicular railway in the canton of Schwyz. It connects the Hintere Schlattli in the municipalities of Muotatal, Morschach, and Schwyz with the village and mountain resort of Stoos, above Morschach. On a length of 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi), it overcomes a height difference of 744 metres (2,441 ft). It opened on 15 December 2017 and replaces the older Schwyz-Stoos funicular, operating since 1933. The carriages are barrel-shaped and rotate to maintain a level floor surface for passengers. Construction took 5 years and cost 52 million Swiss francs.

The new line has a maximum gradient of 110% and is the steepest funicular railway in Switzerland and Europe, superseding the Gelmerbahn. It has been widely claimed to be the steepest in the world, although the Katoomba Scenic Railway in Australia is steeper, with a maximum gradient of 122%, but uses a winch system and is therefore an incline lift and not a funicular railway.

Stoos Village

Stoos is a village located in the municipality of Morschach. It lies at 1,300 metres in the Swiss canton of Schwyz, and has about 100 inhabitants (population was counted at 106 during a 2007 census). It is used as a small ski resort with a cable car leading to the Fronalpstock. The village itself is car-free and is accessible via the Stoosbahn funicular railway. The Swiss Olympic skier Hedi Beeler was born here

Muotathal Village

Muotathal is a village and a municipality in Schwyz District in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. The eponymous valley, the Muotatal, is formed by the Muota, which joins Lake Lucerne at Brunnen.

The village is located in the valley of the river Muota, the Muotatal, with which it shares the name. The municipality is located in a series of valleys on the eastern edge of the canton, on the borders with the cantons of Uri and Glarus. It is the 10th largest municipality area-wise in Switzerland. It consists of the hamlet Ried, village sections of Schachen, Wil, Hinterthal (had its own post office since 1896, though it has now grown together with Schachen), and the hamlet Bisisthal in the Bisistal further upstream of the Muota. It also includes a number of alps including Glatt-, Tor-, Charetalp and Goldplangg.

The municipality Muotathal has an area, as of 2006, of 172.2 km2 (66.5 sq mi). Of this area, 32.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 22% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (44.2%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
