You don’t need an excuse to spend time with your friends and family. But we’re going to give you one anyway. Because with a Family & Friends Railcard you’ll enjoy 1/3 off rail fares for up to 4 adults and 60% off for up to 4 kids between 5 and 15. Plus you can have two adults named on one card, so when one cardholder isn’t using it, the other can.
It means you can save money on trips to see the grandparents, days out to theme parks, or weekends by the seaside – as many times as you like. Here’s what you need to know:
The Railcard costs just £30. So after a couple of trips, the card will have paid for itself. And over a year, you could save an average of £124.
Your Family & Friends Railcard will save you 1/3 off a wide range of tickets. Why not use our journey planner to see what savings you can make?
Your Railcard doesn’t just save you money on travel. It saves you money with our partners too – on theme parks, museums, hotels and more. Visit our Offers and Rewards area regularly to keep up to date on the great deals available.
Get more for your money with a 3-year Railcard.
If you think that you and the family are going to be doing a lot of travelling over the next 3 years, why not buy a 3-year Railcard instead? It costs just £70, saving you £20 on the price of three 1-year Railcards instantly. Then you can get out there and start saving with every adventure.
Family and Friends Railcard Eligiblity Travelling with a child aged 5-15?
Two adults can be named as cardholders on your Family and Friends Railcard. You don't need to travel together but you do need to be travelling with at least one child between the ages of 5 and 15 to be eligible for the discount. What's more, up to four adults and four children can travel on the same card and receive the savings. You don’t need to be related either, so it’s great for big fun days out.
The great news is that if you’re with kids under 5, they travel completely free. Each adult can have up to two ‘under 5s’ with them. But if there’s only one child in the group and they’re under 5, you’ll need to buy them a child ticket to be eligible for the Family & Friends discount. And remember that all child fares are subject to a £1 minimum fare.
If your little one turns 16 before your 1-year Family & Friends Railcard runs out, they can still travel at the discounted child fare for as long as the card is still valid.
If you’ve got a 3-year Railcard and your child turns 16 before it runs out, they can carry on travelling at the discounted child rate until the day before they turn 17.
Family and Friends Railcard When can I use my Railcard?
Your Family & Friends Railcard gets you 1/3 off Standard Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance adult fares, and 60% off for kids’ fares too. And because there’s no limit to the number of times you can use your Railcard, the potential for family adventures is huge.

We aim to dispatch your Railcard within one working day of you ordering it, but it’s probably best to allow up to five working days for your Railcard to arrive. It’ll be sent out free of charge by First Class post, but if you prefer, you have the option to pay for Special Delivery.
You’ll need the physical Railcard with you to be able to get a discount on your rail ticket, so be sure to leave enough time before your journey for the Railcard to reach you. If you need to travel straight away, you’re better off buying a Family & Friends Railcard over the counter at your local staffed station.
At a Staffed Station Ticket Office
You can buy a Family & Friends Railcard at any staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. The main advantage of this is that you can do it on the day you are travelling. You can download the application form here and bring it with you.
Once you've bought your Railcard at a station, you can then register it online. This will make it easier for you to renew or buy other cards online.
